Breaking the Enigma Code: Honoring Polish Cryptologists at Bedford Polish Heritage Day 2023
Every year around the beginning of May, Poles all over the world gather to celebrate our Polish Heritage and Culture during Polish Heritage Days. This year’s theme is particularly significant as it aims to raise awareness about the important work of Polish cryptologists in breaking the Enigma code prior to World War II.
During the war, the Germans used the Enigma machine to encode their messages, making them impossible to decipher without the correct key. However, a group of Polish cryptologists, led by Marian Rejewski, were able to break the code and provide valuable intelligence to the allies. This breakthrough was a major turning point in the war effort and is credited with saving countless lives.
To honor and remember the contributions of these unsung heroes, The Polish School in Bedford is putting on a play about Marian Rejewski and his team of code breakers on Sunday 14th May 2023 during Polish Heritage Day.
Bedford Polish Heritage Day 2023 is completely free of charge and has something for everyone to enjoy. In addition to the play about the Enigma code breakers, there will be live music playing all day with incredible guest performances from Polish artists, activities for children to participate in, as well as a range of delicious Polish food and drinks to try.
So mark your calendars and come join us on May 14th, 2023, for a day filled with entertainment and celebration. We hope to see you there!
