Scam Alert: Fake DWP Winter Fuel Payment Messages

We want to make you aware of a scam message currently circulating. Fraudsters are posing as the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and claiming you must apply for your Winter Fuel Payment for 2025–2026 before a deadline.

This message is fake.

Do not click any links or share personal information.

The DWP will never ask for applications, bank details, or personal data by text or email. Most eligible people receive the Winter Fuel Payment automatically.

If you receive a suspicious message:

  • Do not reply or click on any links.
  • Forward scam emails to report@phishing.gov.uk.
  • Forward scam texts to 7726 (free of charge).

Example of the fake message:

“Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed your eligibility for the Winter Fuel Payment covering the 2025–2026 period. The allowance ranges from £200 to £300 and will be issued as a single payment to assist with heating and rising energy bills. Please ensure your application is submitted by 2 October 2025. Any applications received after this deadline will not be considered. Submit securely through: [link here]”
